Some kids lamps are made to look really cool, but they aren't exactly safe. I remember doing stupid stuff like putting a scarf over my lamp as a teenager to dull the light a bit. What I didn’t realize was that this could have started a fire. While this would have been my fault, some lamps have this hazard built right in. Some have frilly stuff on them that could ignite if the kids lamps are left on for too long, and some are completely made up of materials that will not fare well if the lamps for kids were to be left on for too long.
The kids lamps that were recently recalled were ones made of plastic. They are in the shape of some very popular kids show characters like Spongebob and Dora The Explorer. They look really great, and give off a dimmer light that can be used as a nightlight when you have a child who is afraid of the dark. The lamps are molded with plastic and the bulb is contained within the lamp. The problem with these kids lamps is that once they heat up, the plastic can melt. The plastic can adhere to the skin, which will cause burns, or the lamp could catch on fire.
When buying children’s lamps, you should make sure you think about fire hazards as well as the design of the lamp. Not only should you worry about fire and melting, you should consider the sturdiness of the base of the kids lamps. You don’t want something that will tip over very easily. There are many great lamps for kids out there, and you should have no trouble finding something great to go in your kids rooms that will also match your décor. Just put a little thought into safety as you would with most other things that go into a child’s bedroom.
